Former President Donald Trump said that he couldn’t go vegan because it „messes with your body chemistry” and he couldn’t afford to lose any brain cells, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham writes in her forthcoming memoir.

In the winter of 2019, a then-9-year-old vegan activist known as Vegan Ethan challenged Trump to go vegan for a month for charity. If Trump gave up all animal products and adopted a vegan diet for 30 days, Ethan offered, the group Million Dollar Vegan would donate $1 million to a charity of Trump’s choice.

In early 2020, Grisham says she half-jokingly asked Trump, who has a well-documented love of meat-heavy meals like cheeseburgers and steaks, whether he would do the challenge to raise money for a worthy cause, according to an excerpt of her book „I’ll Take Your Questions Now” published in Politico Magazine on Friday.

But Trump quickly shot down the idea, Grisham wrote, citing not his love of meat but his mental acuity.

„No, no. It messes with your body chemistry, your brain,” Trump said of a vegan diet, according to Grisham. „And if I lose even one brain cell, we’re fucked.”

Going vegetarian or vegan can have numerous health benefits, and not much evidence to suggest it leads to loss of brain cells.

As certified nutritionist Monica Reinagel put it in Scientific American: „There’s little evidence to suggest that a vegetarian or vegan diet impairs brain function or increases the risk of cognitive decline.”

Since leaving office in January 2021, Trump has used his free time to play golf nearly every day and has given up high-sugar snacks like M&Ms, Insider reported in April, with those around him noticing a weight loss and improvement in his mood.

In one instance during his post-presidency recounted in Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s book „Peril,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy paid Trump a visit at his Mar-a-Lago resort where he ordered a cheeseburger without a bun and with a salad on the side instead of fries.

„That really works?” Trump asked, according to the book, following McCarthy in taking the bun off his own burger.

Grisham’s memoir is set to be published on October 5.
